Boost Your Career — Become a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor

Written by Cindy Schroeder

When new bookkeepers and accountants ask me what’s the best thing they can do to launch their business on the right foot, my answer is always, “Become a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor.” There are many benefits to being a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor — for those just starting out as well as for veterans.

In preparing for the certification exam, there are many webinars and educational materials provided to help you learn the most efficient ways to use QuickBooks. Even after 11 years of being a certified Pro Advisor I always learn something new from listening to the materials provided.

Once you become certified you earn the benefit of being listed on the “Find a Pro Advisor” site. The site received over 1 million visitors last year. These are potential clients all looking for you. You can customize your listing to appeal to the clients you are trying to attract.

In my opinion, the most important reason to become certified is that it builds confidence in yourself and in the eyes of your clients. They are looking to you as the QuickBooks expert, and what better way to promote this than with a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor Flag next to your name.

New QuickBooks ProAdvisor Certification Exam

Recently a new QuickBooks Online Certification exam was launched. Previously, you had to become recertified by the anniversary date of when you took the test. Now everyone will be on the same annual certification date of July 31. The certification is now also more streamlined, and if you are already certified you only need to take the re-certification test, which is only 2 modules compared to 5 modules in the original exam.

All of your certification exams and training can be found directly from logging in to your QuickBooks Online Accountant Dashboard and clicking on the ProAdvisor tab on the left side, and then the Training tab on the top toolbar. Here you will find tons of educational materials, from just getting started to preparation for the certifications. All of the Certifications you can obtain will be listed, including QuickBooks Self-Employed, QuickBooks Desktop, Enterprise, POS, and Advanced Certifications.

More Streamlined QuickBooks ProAdvisor Website

There have been some changes made to the overall site in conjunction with the new training and certification to make it more streamlined. The ProAdvisor tab was condensed from 6 tabs into 2 (Benefits and Training) to make it easier for accountants to find and utilize their benefits. That also sets the foundation for the reimagined ProAdvisor program coming later this year.

From the Benefits Tab, you now have the ability to see what tier you are in and what you need to accomplish to get to the next tier. The higher tier allows you to access Diamond Support and ranks you higher on the ProAdvisor Directory.

This page shows you all the other additional benefits you earned, including your discount pricing for online and desktop subscriptions. For paid Desktop ProAdvisors, you can access your Desktop downloads from the benefits page.

On the Benefits page there is a link to your ProAdvisor Directory listing, so that you can verify it is accurate and up to date. Be sure to personalize your profile by adding a picture and promoting the areas of expertise that match the needs of your potential clients. There have been additional service categories added, so be sure to mark all the services that your firm offers. From here you can also copy your profile URL and send it to your clients to gain reviews on your site. That’s important because reviews help you rank higher on the directory listing.

Intuit continues to improve the ProAdvisor experience and the ease with which we can access all the education, benefits, and certifications that they offer. Be sure to tweet me at @BrightBooks so I can help you celebrate becoming certified.
